Getting stuff off of the ground and making better use of vertical wall space in the garage is something lots of people tackle by mounting 2x4s to the wall and partially pounding in some long nails to use as hooks. And while that works, it’s ugly and hard to re-organize later on.
Enter: track systems.
They’re not new, but track systems offer an affordable and clean means of organizing your stuff on the walls of your garage, while remaining completely re-configurable. Careful planning of a track system can make use of almost all available wall space—floor to ceiling.
Track systems are basically rails that [usually] mount horizontally to the wall and are then covered by what becomes the track where the system’s accessories hang sturdy.
There are several brands of track systems available, but the FastTrack Garage Organization System from Rubbermaid is one of the most affordable options we’ve seen with some components coming in at half the cost of other popular brands. And while cheaper is often associated with… well, cheap… the FastTrack rails can hold up to 1,750lbs, when installed properly. That’s comparable to—and even better than–some much more expensive track systems.

The FastTrack system offers over 25 different accessories, including hooks, racks, shelves, cabinets, and baskets. There are also five-, six- or eight-piece starter kits available, which all include a 32″ rail (there are two rails in the eight-piece kit), and various hooks to hang the more common tools and equipment most of us need to store.

While the system does offer sleek black powder coated cabinets—base (ground) or track-mounted options—we don’t see a workbench. But really, track systems are made for hanging stuff, so we’re OK getting our own workbench. Theoretically, you could use two or more base cabinets to lay your workbench topper on (which should be thick enough to absorb the pounding most workbenches endure, so as not to damage the Rubbermaid base cabinets).
