There was a lot of positive but even more negative feedback all over the web around the recent acquisition of the Craftsman brand from Sears by Stanley Black & Decker.
Clearly, Stanley is a solid tool company, having been around since 1843. Sure, the Black & Decker brand is known as a “homeowners” or DIY brand, which is where most of the complaints around the acquisition came from—people worried that B&D would cheapen the Craftsman brand. But let’s not forget that Stanley also owns DEWALT, which mostly caters to professionals and is a very strong brand in and of itself. Perhaps Craftsman fits somewhere in between B&D and DEWALT. Nobody knows yet.
Either way, we think the acquisition is a good thing. Craftsman was struggling on the DIY front and certainly wasn’t much of a player on the professional side of things anymore. And while GarageSpot does cater more to the DIYer and we’re not just a resource for tool-related news, we think and hope that Stanley will lift Craftsman as an innovative brand for both DIYers and pros alike.
With that, here’s a short video from Stanley about the history of the company. Good stuff. Enjoy!
