Back in November at the SEMA show in Vegas, Cummins formally announced their long-awaited crate engine program, Cummins Repower, which brings brand new crate engines from the Cummins factory direct to the consumer.
The first Cummins Repower engine offering will be the R2.8 Turbo Diesel— a turbocharged, 2.8-liter, 4-cylinder engine based on a global platform which is currently used in small pickups, chassis cabs, SUVs, vans, commercial vehicles, and industrial equipment around the world. The platform is a lightweight, electronically controlled, high-pressure common rail (HPCR) compact package ideal for most small pickup and SUV applications.
The R2.8 kit will include the major components necessary to help ensure that even a shade-tree novice has most everything they need to make their Cummins Repower installation as painless as possible, while also ensuring the install is 50-state-emissions-compliant.
Initial testing with the R2.8 installed into an otherwise stock Jeep Wrangler TJ demonstrated that the vehicle not only gained higher peak torque, but the amount of accessible peak torque across the RPM band also increased. In addition to the performance gains, preliminary testing indicates that the R2.8 more than doubled the fuel economy of the Jeep—even tripling it in some cases—all while meeting the Transitional Low-Emission Vehicle LDT2 vehicle emissions standards.
