SpotCheck #19 (But Really #1)

Introducing SpotCheck, from GarageSpot.

There’s a lot of stuff that comes across the workbench here at GarageSpot each week. And while much of it is pretty cool and certainly relevant to our audiences, there’s either not enough to make a full story of it, or we just don’t have time but do want to share.

To that end, we’re going to try pushing a handful of select stories out each Friday in what we’re calling, “SpotCheck.”  The weekly SpotCheck posts will contain bite-sized garage goodness, newsletter style, versus some of our longer articles we typically post. Oh, and this first one is #19 because that’s the calendar week. 🙂

Enjoy!

One Tough Coffeemaker

Coffeeboxx by Oxx
When you gotta have your fix—even on the jobsite—the rugged new Coffeeboxx from Oxx is there for you. Crush proof, spill proof, water resistant and lightweight, this portable pod brewer works with all single-serve coffee pods and features a separate on-demand hot water line for the non-podders. Unlike cordless coffee makers from a few tool companies, the Coffeeboxx requires AC power but does win when it comes to toughness, although we're not sure who is throwing their coffee makers around.

Back to Basics: 12V max CXT™ 3/8" Driver-Drill Kit from MAKITA

The new 12V max CXT™ 3/8" Driver-Drill Kit from MAKITA is a welcomed addition to the DIY'er toolbox. With everything going big-volt these days, we're happy to see a compact, lightweight, yet rugged driver that's not a toy. Sure, it's no powerhouse, but that's not its purpose. This is the perfect go-to for smaller tasks that don't require higher torque 18v-20v drills and drivers.

Like a Roomba for Your Grill

It seems the Grillbot has been around for a little while, but we're just finding out about this char-eating beast. The Grillbot is a robot that cleans your grill much like a Roomba vacuums your house. Grillbot has three motors powering three brushes and draws its power from a lithium-ion battery. The unit can be programmed to run for 10, 20 or 30 minutes. The Grillbot is available on Amazon for about $100 and is available in a variety of colors.

Precise Laser Measurements in a Sleek, Compact Design

Bosch Zamo Laser Measuring Tool
The new Zamo pocket laser measuring tool from Bosch provides precise measurements up to 20m (about 66') that, with the press of a button, appear on an ultra-clear backlit display. The Zamo continuously displays the current distance between the back edge of the tool and the surface that the emitted laser beam hits. Laser measuring devices are typically far more accurate than ultrasound and with further reach. The new Zamo laser measuring tool will be available in retail outlets in August for about $70.

Car and Driver Podcast Expanded

Car and Driver Podcast Logo
Car and Driver magazine recently introduced the first three episodes of its new Car and Driver Review series, expanding upon its existing top-ranking podcast. The new series features editors, writers and contributors from the magazine, with content influenced by the magazine itself. The first reviews, launching this week, include: the Ford Focus RS, by European Editor Mike Duff; the Subaru WRX STI, by Senior Editor Jared Gall; and the Volkswagen Golf R, by Technical Director Eric Tingwall. Subscribe to The Car and Driver Podcast via iTunes or you can listen via the podcast's website.

Get a Grip Detailing Gloves

Detail King Get a Grip Gloves
Latex gloves are a powdery, weak mess. When under the hood or detailing the ride, a better option is disposable nitrile gloves that you may've seen or used before. Now, Detail King has an even stronger version of the nitrile glove called, Get a Grip. These new purple power nitrile gloves are latex- and powder-free with a bumpy texture, giving them significantly more gripping power. Available in large or XL, a box of 100 (or 90 for XL) will run around $20 + shipping.

Wyper: Tinder for Cars

Wyper, best described as "Tinder for Cars," is now available for free on iOS and Android devices. The Wyper platform uses intelligent predictive search, allowing car shoppers to swipe, or "wype," through the results. The platform is designed to give consumers a single location to view the largest amount of listings from dealers nationwide, conveniently from their mobile phones. Better yet, the results are completely customized based on factors derived directly from the consumers themselves.

Real-Time Wireless HD Camera for Anglers

A bit outside of the garage, but when we saw this, we just had to share: an HD camera for your fishing pole, called the Fishing FanCam. Unfortunately, the Kickstarter funding initiative wasn't successful, but I doubt they'll stop there.
